I've just started an experiment where I draw cards daily. If I have time, I do a 3 card reading of some sort (body, mind, heart/spirit; thesis, antithesis, synthesis; hope, help, hindrance; and so on), or I just draw a single card indicating the energies I should be aware of that day. I keep track of these in my journal, noting briefly what's going on in my life so that I have some context when I look over the entries later. I'm also keeping track of what cards and elements show up repeatedly.
I like what lanterne_rouee said about pre-made spreads. As a beginner, I find that they can be useful as a learning tool, but if I'm doing a meaningful reading, I'll either create my own spread or, more likely, just start throwing out cards and using the deck as a tool for dialogue.
